Camp Electives

Music education mixed with enjoyable and friendship-building activities.

Thanks to the elite musical staff and lively camp counsoulers, Florida Southern's String Orchestra Camp has activties that students of all ages and playing abilities can enjoy!

Florida Southern's String Orchestra Camp offers activies that offer a wide array of musical training including piano, music theory, world drumming, and fiddle improvisation!

Piano

Piano is one of the most useful instruments to learn as a musician because it helps with ear training, music theory, pitch, and more! Campers will learn to play the piano using the state-of-the art Roland piano lab available at Florida Southern College.

  • Group Piano I (beginners) students with no piano or very little piano experience.
    Meets Monday/Wednesday

  • Group Piano II (intermediate) students should be able to sight-read simple piano pieces and know how to play all major 5-finger patterns with I--IV--I-V--I primary chord progression.             Meets Tuesday/Thursday

Music Theory

Instructors: Abigail Workman and Tyler Marais

We know how to make the music, but music theory tells us WHY music sounds the way it does. Campers who take music theory will learn the "why" behind music which will make creating music a whole lot easier!

Campers will learn notes on different clefs, key signatures, and more! (including how to compose your own piece of music!)

Aural Skills

Instructors: Abigail Workman and Tyler Marais

Aural Skills is also known as "ear training". Aural Skills is important for our campers to be able to play more tune, sing their parts, and more!

Campers will learn solfege, learn to sing scales and songs, and learn to hear intervals for playing in tune better!

World Drumming

Instructor: Mr. Nate Strawbridge

World Drumming is one the most fun, interactive, and educational activity available at camp! Campers will learn to play the tubano, djembe, and congas through rhythmic improvasation.

Everyone has a blast during the World Drumming workshop (including the camp counselors!). Take a look at a video of this workshop in action!

Fiddle / Beginning Improvisation

Students can explore the improvisational and jazz styles of fiddle playing in this camp elective. Students will learn basic fiddle tunes, how to improvise, and fiddle technique.

Students may sign up for recital hour when they arrive at camp.
